U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) today joined Senator John McCain (R-AZ) in introducing a Senate resolution that calls for an independent investigation into recent reports of classified information regarding U.S. military and intelligence operations being leaked to the media. The resolution expresses the Sense of the Senate that Attorney General Eric Holder should appoint an outside special counsel to investigate the unauthorized disclosure of classified and sensitive information by administration officials.
"The public disclosure of classified information is illegal and undermines our national security -- potentially endangering ongoing operations and American lives," said Senator Ayotte, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. "Since it appears that administration officials may have been involved in the leaks, it's critical to appoint an outside special counsel to conduct an independent investigation, and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable."
