Hall Statement on Dismal May Jobs Report

Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Ralph Hall (R-TX) today released the following statement after the Department of Labor released its employment data for the month of May:

I am disappointed, but not surprised, to review the abysmal May jobs report and see that unemployment is back up to 8.2 percent. As Americans struggle to find jobs and support their families, this Administration continues to push an economic and regulatory agenda that puts a higher burden on businesses. While many factors have contributed to a weakened economy, the fact is that President Obama's policies have deterred any momentum for an economic recovery.

"In the first three years of this Administration, there have been over one hundred major new regulations, imposing additional costs of more than $46 billion per year on Americans. And this year, the U.S. achieved the distinction of having the highest marginal corporate income tax in the industrialized world. The President has blocked and delayed projects to expand domestic energy production and has imposed rules that kill jobs and make our energy more expensive. The Science, Space, and Technology Committee has conducted significant oversight of this issue and identified extensive flaws in the scientific and technical justifications used by the Administration to advance its agenda. With this steady stream of red tape, high taxes, and new regulation, businesses simply cannot afford to hire.

"For all of these reasons, House Republicans have crafted what we call a Plan for America's Job Creators, designed to remove Government barriers that have hindered economic growth. House Republicans want to reduce burdensome regulations, expand domestic energy production, and put Americans back to work."
