Buerkle Statement on May Jobs Numbers

Today, Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25) released the following statement in reaction to the May jobs report from the U.S. Department of Labor. The unemployment rate rose a tenth of a point to 8.2 percent after only 69,000 jobs were created in the month of May.

"Today's job report is disappointing, but not surprising. This Administration continues its' the failed policies of tax hikes, over-regulation, and increased spending. Senate refuses to pass a budget or act on any of the thirty jobs bills the House has sent them. As a result of both, an increase in the unemployment rate is not unexpected. The numbers released today do not even take into account the number of people who have given up on looking for work, meaning the actual unemployment number is likely much higher.

"Too many Americans remain out of work. We must remain focused on promoting a pro-growth agenda and giving our businesses the certainty they need to create jobs and expand. We need to get the government out of the way of America's job creators. With families continuing to struggle to make ends meet in difficult economic times, it is more important than ever that we work toward solutions that will create economic certainty and empower America's small businesses to invest, grow, and hire."
