Buerkle: Syrian Massacres Unacceptable

Statement

Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25), Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and United States Congressional Representative to the United Nations, released the following statement regarding reports of the latest massacre in Syria, said to have resulted in 78 deaths, including women and children.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the Syrian people who continue to suffer at the hands of the Assad regime. It is unacceptable that that these massacres are taking place in Syria on a regular basis.

"The international community should be outraged at the barbaric violence that continues to escalate. Thousands of innocent Syrians have died in protest to Assad's regime -- a regime that has consistently proven to be anti-democratic and oppressive. The international community must come together to help the Syrian people and urge Assad to relinquish power."

Syrian activists reported two new attacks by troops and militia loyal to the Assad regime, killing at least 78 people including women and children, in central Syria on Wednesday. This marks the second massacre in the past two weeks. On May 25th, 108 civilians were killed in Houla at the hands of pro-government forces.
