Gov. Dave Heineman today announces the State's involvement in the Omaha Hiring Our Heroes Initiative to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment. A Hiring Our Heroes Fair was held in Lincoln in April, serving over 350 current and former military members and spouses.

"The success of the Lincoln Hiring Our Heroes event shows how powerful this initiative has become," said Gov. Dave Heineman. "The Omaha event June 12th will be another great opportunity for Nebraska employers to come together to help meet the needs of our military."

The hiring fair is a cooperative effort between the United States Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraska Department of Labor and the Nebraska National Guard. The Hero2Hired (H2H) program and Walmart are sponsors of the Omaha event. Numerous other partners, including military groups and media outlets, are promoting the fair.

"We are proud to be one of many partners working to make the next hiring event a success," said Catherine D. Lang, Director of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development and Commissioner of the Nebraska Department of Labor.

Hiring Our Heroes has helped over 9,000 veterans across the country find employment and put to use the diverse skill sets they bring to the workforce. There are over 80 employers registered for the Omaha fair so far, representing hundreds of job opportunities.

Nebraska's veterans and their spouses are invited to the Hiring Our Heroes Fair June 12th at the DC Centre Banquet Facility in Omaha. On June 1st, the Nebraska Department of Labor and other partners hosted a workshop in preparation for the hiring fair at the South Omaha Campus of Metropolitan Community College. Like the hiring fair, this event was intended to help current and former servicemen and women translate their military skills into the civilian job market. Sessions covered resume writing, meeting with employers, professional etiquette and other career topics.

Among these thousands of Nebraska service members are the more than 1,200 Nebraska Army National Guard Soldiers who have returned home to Nebraska from overseas deployments since last May.
