Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO), a member of the House Budget Committee, announced that he voted for an amendment to prohibit funding for the Missouri River Authorized Purposes Study (MRAPS). This $25 million study duplicates a recently completed, $35 million study that confirmed the existing authorized purposes for the Missouri River. Congressman Akin released the following statement:
"The Missouri River is a vital national asset and we must work to protect it. Instead of using precious taxpayer dollars to duplicate an existing study we should be prioritizing funding for flood control and recovery. Prohibiting funding for this study both protects taxpayer dollars and makes it clear that the existing purposes of the Missouri River are valid and should not be tampered with."
