Today is the United Nations Environment Programme's 40th Annual World Environment Day. This day is intended to stimulate international political attention and action on environmental issues. The theme of this year's celebration is "Green Economy: Does it Include You?" With this theme the Programme is hoping to promote the awareness of a resource efficient and socially equitable global economy.
"It is always exciting to see the United Nations promoting such an important element of our future. Having worked with The Port of Long Beach, 'the green port', for many years, I understand the value of environmental consciousness as an aspect of successful economic development," Congresswoman Laura Richardson stated.
Communities around the globe are celebrating World Environment Day in unique ways. In Los Angeles, the California Institute of Environmental Design and Management is hosting a workshop that will promote public awareness of and action on World Environment Day.
"As a member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition, I have been working to ensure that the U.S. takes steps to become a "Green Economy". I am pleased to celebrate this special day with people around the world," Congresswoman Richardson said.
