Tonight, Martin Heinrich won the primary election for New Mexico's open U.S. Senate seat. Heinrich's overwhelming victory was driven by strong, state-wide support and positions him well going into the 2012 general election against Republican Heather Wilson.
Rallying supporters at his campaign headquarters on election night and thanking them for their hard work, Heinrich released the following statement:
"I congratulate Hector Balderas on a clean, well-run campaign. I know Hector has a bright future in politics, and I look forward to working with him.
"I'm running for the United States Senate because I want our children -- yours and mine -- to inherit the kind of country we all grew up believing in: an America where you prosper if you work hard and play by the rules. But I can't get there without you. Tonight we will celebrate a great win, but tomorrow the real work begins as we unite to defeat Heather Wilson.
"In sharp contrast to Congresswoman Wilson who voted to raise her own pay six times while voting against raising the minimum wage, I've always stood up for what's right for our country and for the people of New Mexico.
"It is critical that we reject Heather Wilson's misplaced priorities that put tax breaks for millionaires ahead of Social Security and Medicare for our seniors. New Mexico deserves better and New Mexicans deserve results.
"The 2012 election will leave its stamp on our state for many years to come. I have a proven track record of fighting for New Mexicans, and I will carry that fight to the U.S. Senate."
