Ocean Champions, which works to build political power for the oceans by helping to elect pro-ocean candidates to the U.S. Congress endorses Congressman Martin Heinrich (D-NM) for Senate.
"Congressman Heinrich puts significant faith in science, and he knows how important it is to address our addiction to fossil fuels," said David Wilmot, Ph.D., Ocean Champions' President and Co-Founder. "He's been a great champion for renewable energy as a solution for climate change and for economic development, and we're confident he'll be a Senate leader on issues affecting ocean health."
The Congressman lives and breathes his sustainable philosophy, having served on many environmental committees and boards outside of his Congressional responsibilities. He is a former director of the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, and has served on the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter's Executive Committee, and as a Natural Resources Trustee in state. He is also an avid outdoorsman, and counts fishing as a favorite family pursuit.
In Washington, he has been an important voice on the House Natural Resources Committee, and his ocean / environmental record is impressive. He helped pass the Omnibus Public Lands Act, which protected sensitive coastal and estuarine areas, and funded significant research on threats to ocean habitat. He has pushed for improved water quality (fresh and salt), and worked to protect threatened marine animals. The Congressman also worked to win federal protection for the Ojito Wilderness and to restore contaminated public lands using funds from environmental polluters. He's been a strong voice defending the EPA's ability to hold polluters accountable under the Clean Air Act, and has been a vocal leader on sustainable energy, introducing the Clean Energy Promotion Act in the last two Congresses.
"The Ocean Champions' commitment protecting the health of our oceans and wildlife is unwavering. It is truly an honor to receive their endorsement," Heinrich said. "As a diver for two decades now, it's hard to think of a more beautiful and peaceful experience than being beneath the ocean's surface. I've dedicated my life to sustainably managing our natural landscapes and developing the country's clean energy resources. The stewardship of our nation's special places, and the economies they support, will be among my top priorities in the Senate."
