Our agricultural system has been largely corporatized. Agribusiness and lenders gain record profits while farmers often have to take second jobs to keep their farms running. Industrial farming enables a few to harvest large acreages of land, yet it depletes the soil and requires enormous inputs of petroleum products and pesticides. Large subsidies for crops including corn and soybeans, enable us to dump surplus grain onto third world countries, which displaces millions of farmers. We need to end the corporate control of our agriculture, promote organic farming, pay farmers parity prices, and end destructive crop subsidies.
