Michelle Lujan Grisham Wins Primary Election

Statement

Democratic voters gave Michelle Lujan Grisham the primary-election victory for the First Congressional District, nominating her to take on the Republicans in the General Election in November.

"Tonight, the people have spoken loud and clear -- they want to send a fighter for the Middle Class to Congress," Michelle Lujan Grisham said.

Michelle Lujan Grisham won with 40 percent of the primary vote; Eric Griego had 35 percent; and Marty Chavez had 25 percent.

"Voters had a choice in this primary. Tonight, they chose the candidate who not only identifies with the daily struggles of working families, but also dedicated a career to fighting for those families. I was successful because I always knew who my boss was -- I answered to those families and those seniors.

"I'm going to take that same attitude and sense of mission with me to Congress -- to start the hard work of changing the way Washington works."

Lujan Grisham saluted her opponents in the hard-fought contest, and asked their supporters to give her an opportunity to earn their support for the general election.

"I respect Eric Griego's passion for standing up to the powerful on behalf of the poor and dispossessed in society--those who have the least," Lujan Grisham said. "And I acknowledge Marty Chavez's long record of accomplishment for the people of Albuquerque. I salute his service.

"We may have had disagreements but we have shared values and priorities. We all had the same agenda -- the agenda of the American people and the agenda of New Mexico families.

"To those who supported one of my opponents, I hope that I can earn your support. We need to be unified and strong to beat the forces of the Republican Party that will be line up against us. We all know that Heather Wilson and Janice Arnold-Jones will answer to the Republican Party."
