There is a movement sweeping across the Eleventh Congressional District. Community and school gardens are cropping up across our neighborhoods. Urban farms are producing fresh fruits and vegetables on building rooftops and where foreclosed properties once stood. Farmers markets are equipped with the technology needed to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or food stamp benefits.
People are taking a real interest in how we feed our children in school and whether our food banks have the nutritious resources needed to provide the safety net that protects people from hunger. Efforts to eradicate food deserts are underway and we all stand to benefit from the fresh fruits, vegetables and produce that will become more accessible.
As a member of the House of Representatives Agriculture Committee, I work to strengthen and protect federal feeding and hunger programs and initiatives. New and non-traditional farmers like those who live and work in our neighborhoods, are my priority. I truly believe the best of the Eleventh District's urban agriculture and wellness movement is only yet to come.
