Congressman Canseco's Statement on Passage of the Fiscal Year 2013 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill

Congressman Francisco "Quico" Canseco (TX-23), a strong supporter of our nation's active duty military and veterans, released the following statement on House Passage of the Fiscal Year 2013 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill:

"Yesterday, my colleagues and I in the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan measure to provide our military with the necessary resources to house and train our service men and women, ensure we continue providing a positive quality of life for our armed forces and their families, and continue working to maintain our formidable military base structure. This legislation also ensures that we are providing the resources needed to care for our veterans, ensuring that they receive the health benefits, services and programs that they have earned through their service to our nation. Keeping in line with my goal to address our nation's deficit, this bill is funded at the same overall level as Fiscal Year 2012, however we able to increase funding within the bill for critical services and programs for our veterans," said Congressman Canseco.

Highlights of the bill include:

* A total mandatory and discretionary funding level of $61.7 billion for the Veterans Benefits Administration - an increase of $10.5 billion, or 20 percent over FY 2012, and is equal to the President's request.
* Provides a total of $52 billion for the Veterans Health Administration, an increase of $1.9 billion over FY 2012 and equal to the President's request.
* Funding to the Veterans' Benefits Administration which includes $12.6 billion in readjustment benefits to finance the education and training of service men and women and veterans.

"I was proud to support this bill that provides funding for services and resources that will benefit our military, their families and veterans. It's the least we can do for their service," concluded Congressman Canseco.
