Michaud Praises Naming of USNS MIllinocket

Today, Congressman Mike Michaud praised the Navy's decision to name a new joint high speed vessel the USNS Millinocket. The vessel is currently under construction at the Austal shipyard in Mobile, Alabama.

"I'm pleased that the Navy chose to name another ship after the town of Millinocket, on the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Millinocket," said Michaud. "Maine has a long, proud history of shipbuilding that deserves to be recognized and honored by the naming of our Navy's vessels."

The USS Millinocket, a freighter ship, was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Cuba on June 17, 1942.

Congressman Michaud is also working to have a new destroyer named after Stephen W. Groves, a World War II hero from East Millinocket who was killed in action at the Battle of Midway. The first USS Stephen W. Groves was commissioned in 1982 and decommissioned in February 2012.
