Dewhurst for Texas Unveils Texas Law Enforcement Coalition

Press Release

Date: May 7, 2012

The Dewhurst for Texas campaign unveiled its Texas Law Enforcement Coalition, highlighting the endorsements of the most influential law enforcement associations in Texas, including the Texas chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas (CLEAT), and the Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA).

Dewhurst has made it his commitment to ensure the security and safety of all Texans, and has worked closely with the law enforcement community to strengthen criminal penalties for sexual predators of children, honor the fallen men and women of law enforcement, and develop legislation that allows law enforcement to do their jobs as effectively as possible.

"Dewhurst promised the law enforcement community that Texas would strengthen the law regarding the rape, abduction of children and he kept his word with the passage of "Jessica's Law.' When the apologists for criminals tried to kill the bill, Dewhurst took the criticism, stood strong and made it happen. We've been able to count on him to keep his word no matter how difficult the political circumstances," CLEAT Director of Public Affairs Charlie Wilkison stated.
"While some elected leaders have cratered under the pressure of special interest groups and suggested going backwards, Texas has actually strengthened the law dealing with criminals and better protecting the average citizens," Wilkison continued.

"Public safety has had a dedicated ally during David Dewhurst's time as Lieutenant Governor; his continuing efforts have made our cities safer, our criminal laws stronger, and have discouraged organized crime and international criminals from breaking our laws here in Texas," said Texas State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police President Frank G. Plowick. "His commitment, courage and integrity represent the core values of our National motto, "Law is the Safeguard of Freedom.'"

"[Dewhurst has] led the fight in the Texas Legislature to give us the tools that we need to take criminals off the streets and to keep them off," said TMPA Executive Director Kevin Lawrence. "While others have talked a good game on fighting crime, [Dewhurst has] stood strong for us in the trenches of political warfare winning many victories for the men and women of law enforcement around the great state of Texas."

"Police officers and first responders each day put on the uniform, knowing they may be heading into harm's way for the express purpose of keeping Texans safe," said David Dewhurst. "To know that these brave men and women are endorsing my campaign is a true honor, and I will safeguard that commitment to the law enforcement community if I am elected to the U.S. Senate."
