Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-Miramar) made the following statement in response to recent actions taken by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections regarding Governor Scott's misguided attempt to purge Florida's voting roles and disenfranchise eligible voters:
"I applaud the Department of Justice for calling on Governor Scott to suspend the voter purge, as well as the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections' subsequent decision to stop processing the flawed list used to implement the purge. This was a concerted, collaborative effort led by the Governor to suppress and confuse voters. It was not transparent and a clear violation of the law. I, along with many others in Florida, have fought for the right to vote. To have somebody come along as a 'Scotty come lately' and decide that he is going to suppress the rights of voters is absolutely insane.
"Furthermore, I was pleased to see that a key provision of Governor Scott's egregious election law overhaul was struck down by a federal judge yesterday. This provision imposed overly burdensome restrictive requirements on voter registration groups, suppressing their efforts to bring more voters to the polls.
"I hope that Governor Scott will heed these warnings and cease his continued attacks on one of the most fundamental rights of our democracy: the right to vote."
