My father served the in the US Army during World War II, and our family always understood the meaning of service and sacrifice. Our nation is reminded of that meaning today, as bold men and women continue to make that sacrifice in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. They leave behind friends, family and children, and our proud Republic owes these heroes a debt that can never be repaid.
Memorial Day isn't just about celebrating the beginning of summer with a day off from work or school. It's not just about cookouts or a day at the beach. It's a poignant day of remembrance. It's a moment for all of us to honor the sacrifice and courage of those proud, brave men and women who make our American democracy possible.
