Statement

Dear Friends,

America continues to try to regain its footing following the worst recession since the Great Depression, and history reminds us that it is not bloated stimulus packages or federal takeovers of our health care system that will set our country back on the path of prosperity. Rather, in times of economic struggle, our country becomes increasingly dependent on the success of small business to restore us to economic health. Small businesses create more jobs than their public sector counterparts. In fact, nearly 70% of new jobs being created are generated through small businesses. That is why I'm excited that this week is National Small Business Week.

Small businesses have always been and continue to be the machine that drives our economy. Since our country's inception, many Americans have strived to achieve something greater and starting a small business has been the catalyst for change in so many American lives. Beginning a business takes risk, hard work, and a vision. Those individuals who take that chance and succeed, are able to create jobs, and ought to be commended for their work and achievements.

While at home, in my district in southwest Ohio, I take the opportunity to meet with small business owners to hear about their successes as well as their struggles. The sentiment of the majority of them is resounding uncertainty and frustration with additional government regulation and red tape.

It is critical that we work in Washington to reduce these burdens on our country's most important job creators. As a member of the House Small Business Committee I see it as a priority as we strive to get our economy back on track.

I'd like to offer a heartfelt thank you to all of our nation's small business owners, especially those in the First District of Ohio. I am thankful for your sacrifice and the risk you've taken to begin and sustain a business in this difficult economy. The jobs you create are the ones that will help see us out of this recession and are vital to America's economic recovery.
