Today U.S. Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) made the following statement after the passage of a bipartisan amendment to H.R. 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act, which Bass authored to prevent human trafficking by defense contractors, subcontractors and their labor brokers.

"I am extremely pleased that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle were able to come together today to finally approve this extremely important amendment that requires the Department of Defense to highlight and provide incentives to end human trafficking and exploitation among U.S. contractors.

"Unfortunately, last year, the Commission on Wartime Contracting uncovered tragic evidence which showed that existing provisions failed to prevent human trafficking by labor brokers and subcontractors. Additionally, the Commission found that incentives exist for subcontractors to lure third-country nationals into coming to work for the United States contractors, only to be grossly mistreated in the long run. After today's vote, our nation will be on track to develop a proactive framework to bring a swift end to these harmful practices as well as encourage contractors to implement rigorous anti-trafficking standards to avoid these illicit activities from ever taking place again."
