Congressman Ben Quayle released the following statement after H.R. 4119, the Border Tunnel Prevention Act of 2012 passed the House. Rep. Quayle was the lead Republican sponsor of this measure, which combats the increasingly prevalent use of illegal cross-border tunnels by criminal cartels in Mexico and the US. The bill passed by a margin of 416-4.
"I'm very pleased to see this common sense measure to stop the use of illegal cross-border tunnels pass the House. For more than twenty years, criminal drug cartels and human smugglers have used these tunnels to smuggle drugs, weapons and people between the United States and Mexico. 74 of these tunnels have been found in Arizona alone. Currently, the criminal penalties for those caught attempting or conspiring to construct, finance and use these tunnels are absurdly low. This bill addresses that problem.
"It has been a pleasure to work with Congressman Reyes to pass this bill through the House, which has already passed the Senate. I hope the President will make sure that this important legislation becomes law. It is time to finally put a stop to the rampant construction and use of these illegal tunnels."
