Dear Michiganders:

Since arriving in Washington in January, I've been on a mission to create economic opportunities for the people of Michigan's 13th District. Achieving this mission means not only attracting quality high-wage jobs to metro Detroit but also building a world-class education system, reducing healthcare costs, and stemming the tide of foreclosures.

Over the past four months, we've had some encouraging news:

* General Motors announced a milestone of four consecutive quarters of profitability, creating thousands of metro Detroit jobs.

* Our Office succeeded in tripling a federal grant available for Detroit Public Schools, from $10 million to $30 million.

* Amid unprecedented budget cuts, I fought successfully to secure funding for Detroit firefighters and community health clinics.

* Our Office has responded to over 1,500 constituent cases, addressing issues from home foreclosures to Social Security claims.

Southeastern Michigan is facing an economic crisis. Unemployment levels in metro Detroit are unacceptable, and far too many people in our community are underemployed and underpaid. Right now, I am fighting to bring federal grants to the 13th District to build industry and infrastructure, including a high-speed rail system, as well as to expand federal investment in our schools. I'm also fighting for fairness in bank lending practices, stopping illegal foreclosures, and keeping people in their homes. Over the long-term, I am working to build a positive climate for workers, investors, and families in metro Detroit. This means enhancing public safety, financial stability, and environmental quality in the region.

As taxpayers, please remember that I am your dedicated employee. Please continue to contact me with your thoughts and concerns on all issues. My staff and I are committed to serving you and to building a brighter future for Southeastern Michigan.

Sincerely,

Hansen Clarke
Member of Congress
