The Ways and Means Subcommittees on Oversight and Social Security held a hearing this week on identity theft and tax fraud. During the hearing, I spoke of a recent visit with a constituent who expressed concern for a neighboring business being used as a drop off location for fraudulent tax returns. I asked witnesses from the IRS what action should be taken for suspicious scenarios such as the one observed by my constituent, and how the agency investigates and responds. Fraudulent tax refunds have cost taxpayers more than $100 billion in recent years. Identity theft cannot be tolerated which is why I have both sponsored and cosponsored legislation (such as H.R. 1956 and H.R. 3475) to curb this criminal activity.
My Irving office also regularly holds Identity Theft Prevention Forums throughout the 24th District to help inform Texans how to safeguard their information. To learn about the next event, please call my Irving office at (972) 556-0162.
