U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) issued the following statement regarding the resignation of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko.
"I appreciate Chairman Jaczko's hard work in the fight against Yucca Mountain. The Chairman and I have consistently opposed making Nevada our nation's nuclear waste dump. Yucca Mountain is a threat to public safety, and no amount of reassurance from the federal government will convince me or the residents of Nevada otherwise. While we need to responsibly develop all of our nation's energy resources, including nuclear energy, the irresponsible history of Yucca Mountain undermines the integrity of the project. Chairman Jaczko played an important role in opposing Yucca Mountain, and I hope his successor will continue this fight," said Senator Dean Heller.
