Today Congressman Todd Akin, Chairman of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, released a letter he led signed by twenty-five other House Republicans, asking Chairman Buck McKeon to include the language from H.R. 4388, the Right to Habeas Corpus Act, into the FY2013 National Defense Authorization Act. H.R. 4388 was introduced in April by Rep. Scott Rigell (R-VA) and Rep. Jeff Landry (R-LA). The bill firmly states that the detainee provisions of the FY2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) do not allow for the indefinite detention of citizens without the right of redress.
Congressman Akin released the following statement regarding this effort:
"The Constitution is the highest law of the land. Some have raised concerns that the detainee language in the FY2012 NDAA. I believe including the Rigell-Landry bill in this year's NDAA will remove any ambiguity and make it clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that habeas corpus has not been suspended and that no American can be detained unlawfully by the government."
