Rep. Hahn Responds to Jobs Report with Call for New Investment

Issues: Transportation

Today, Congresswoman Janice Hahn commented on the new employment numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing that the transportation sector lost 17,000 jobs in April. These losses occurred despite the fact that, on the whole, the economy added 115,000 jobs.

"The best way to grow the economy and reduce the deficit is to put Americans back to work," Rep. Hahn said. "The latest employment numbers show the urgent need to invest in our crumbling infrastructure in order to create jobs. That's why I've introduced legislation to repair structurally deficient bridges across the country. This is a win-win for the American economy that will put Americans back to work today and rebuild our infrastructure for future economic growth."

Congresswoman Hahn introduced H.R. 3837, the "Bridge to Jobs Act" in January. The Republican-controlled Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has yet to take action on the bill.

"I also urge Speaker Boehner to work with the Senate to get a final transportation bill completed without delay," said Rep. Hahn. "The transportation bill is absolutely vital to ongoing transportation projects. State and local governments need federal funding to finish projects already under way and to start critical new projects."
