Dear Friend,

I spent quite a bit of time on the House of Representatives floor last week fighting bigger government and bloated spending during our annual appropriations process.

This past week, we focused most of our legislative time on the first 2013 Appropriations bill, which funds the Departments of Commerce and Justice. To my delight, it upheld the pledge I took along with House Republicans and did not contain a single earmark.

This is a true testament to how far we have come in changing the tone in Washington, but our work is far from over.

This appropriations bill, which passed the House, included an amendment I authored. My amendment, which passed 232 -180, prevents any of our taxpayer money from being used by the federal government to sue any state because of its voter ID laws -- including requiring photo ID to vote.

I am a strong believer that any state that wants to enforce a law requiring photo IDs should be able to do so without fear of a federal lawsuit. If you need an ID to rent a car, open a library card, or board a plane, you should have to show an ID when casting your vote at the polls.

Sadly, too many times, and we have seen it here in Arizona, this Administration and the federal government have overreached by suing states who simply enforce federal law. I believe it is unconscionable for our tax dollars to be used for politically motivated law suits, and I am glad the House passed my amendment.
