I write to urge that the House immediately consider United States Postal Service (USPS) reform legislation. Following the Senate's passage of S. 1789, the 21st Century Postal Service Act of 2012, it is imperative that the House pass bipartisan reform legislation before postal facilities across the country are slated to close on May 15.

Without congressional action, more than 220 mail processing facilities, including the Hampden, Maine Eastern Maine Processing and Distribution Center in my district, face imminent closure or consolidation. Planned consolidation of the Hampden facility would mean the elimination of 170 jobs and lead to substantial reductions in service in my state.

Many rural communities in my district are dependent on the USPS as their only source of mail and parcel delivery. As you are undoubtedly aware, an increasing number of Americans are reliant on the USPS for items like vital prescription medication and other order-by-mail services. Businesses across Maine also depend on timely and consistent mail service to send goods and receive payment.

Congress must act swiftly to set the USPS on a path to long-term sustainability that will allow it to continue to provide the services that Americans expect and deserve. We must act to ensure that this essential part of our infrastructure is not taken away from the rural communities that rely on service the most.
