Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today issued the following statement following the announcement from the Department of Veterans Affairs that they are hiring additional mental practitioners:
"The news that the VA will be hiring 1,900 new mental health care practitioners to help treat our nation's heroes is welcomed. These men and women have put their lives on the line for us, and now we owe it to them to ensure they receive the best treatment possible when they return home.
As a doctor who worked in a VA hospital for 25 years, I know the challenges facing Northern Michigan's veterans. Our veterans have battled for freedom. They should not have to battle here at home for adequate care.
While serving as Michigan's lone member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, I hear from veterans on a regular basis about problems in receiving their benefits. To help address this issue, I am working on a plan to address the benefit claims backlog and ensure that the process moves in a timely manner. I'm looking forward to discussing it further with my fellow committee members."
