Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) will join fellow Members of Congress, Florida State legislators and other elected officials as they thank Governor Rick Scott as he signs HB 959, a Florida law that prohibits state and local governments from contracting with companies that have business ties with the dictatorial regimes of Syria and Cuba. The ceremonial signing ceremony will take place tomorrow Tuesday, May 1st at 11 am at the Freedom Tower, located at 600 Biscayne Boulevard, downtown Miami. Ileana will attend this important event with her husband, former U.S. attorney Dexter Lehtinen.
Said Ros-Lehtinen, "I appreciate the Governor's commitment to freedom and liberty, and I congratulate him for putting the interests of Florida's taxpayers before those of businesses. Florida taxpayers should not unintentionally support the dictatorships of Assad and the Castro brothers through business contacts. This legislation will assure that this practice ends.
At a time when the Assad regime in Syria is systematically murdering its own citizens and the Castro brothers are harassing, beating and jailing members of the peaceful pro democracy movement, we must do all within our power to deny these tyrants financial benefits from Floridians.
I applaud the Florida legislature and Governor Scott for taking this brave stance for solidarity and against tyrants. Unfortunately, this principled leadership is absent at the White House, and therefore state governments must do what the Obama Administration fails in accomplishing."
