U.S. Congressman John Carney (D-DE) today praised the announcement that Delta Air Lines is purchasing the ConocoPhillips refinery in Trainer, Pennsylvania, which employs thousands of local workers and has not been active since October 2011.

"Today's announcement is fantastic news for the thousands of people who work at the ConocoPhillips refinery. I'm glad that the refinery will continue to operate on a stretch of the Delaware River that has provided jobs for so many years, while utilizing the unique skill sets of local workers. For months, I have been working closely with union leaders, business executives and my fellow elected officials from around the region to find a viable way to save the refinery. By maintaining strong refinery production, we strengthen U.S. security and improve gas, diesel, and home heating oil price stability for Americans, especially in the Northeast.

"I commend Delta's bold action to address rising fuel costs. The fact that they have formed a new energy company and brought on a team of refining experts is a testament to how seriously they are taking this endeavor. I look forward to working with ConocoPhillips, Delta, and the workers to ensure a smooth transition."
