Buerkle Statement On March Job Report

Representative Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25) issued the following statement today regarding the latest unemployment report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A total of 120,000 jobs were created and the unemployment rate fell a tenth of a point to 8.2 percent.

"The unemployment rate has remained above 8% for over three straight years and when we consider those who have given up looking for work it is at 11.3%.

"During the last three years we have seen one million people lose their job and half of Americans classified as low income or living in poverty -- including 14% in Upstate New York according to the U.S. Census. In the same three years the price of gasoline has doubled and our national debt has increased by $5 trillion.

"Our country's economic recovery could be happening at a quicker pace if the government would get out of the way. The president continues to support the failed policies of wasteful government spending, higher taxes, and increased regulations, while obstructing pro-growth economic initiatives like the Keystone XL pipeline. Making matters worse, we have a "do nothing Senate' that has not passed a budget in more than three years and has refused to act on any of the thirty jobs bills passed by the House.

"America needs an energy policy that reduces dependence on foreign oil and gives Americans relief at the pump. We need a budget that reduces out of control government spending. Our focus should be bipartisan, pro-growth solutions that will generate economic certainty and empower America's small businesses to create jobs."
