Representative Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25) issued the following statement today regarding the latest report that unemployment claims increased by 13,000 in the week ended April 7. The Labor Department reported that the total at the end of the week was 380,000, which marks the highest number since January 28, 2012.
"The latest report revealing a steady increase in unemployment claims since January is distressing. This is yet another sign that the predictions of economists that the jobs market has plateaued may be true.
"The unfortunate reality is that our nation is still facing a desperate fiscal situation. The federal government remains heavily in debt and the economy is still struggling mightily. With unemployment this high and confidence in the market low, we cannot afford to plateau. Instead, we must revamp our efforts to stimulate the economy.
"Our country's economic recovery could be happening at a quicker pace. We need an energy policy and a budget that reduces out-of-control government spending. In Congress, our focus should be bipartisan, pro-growth solutions that will generate economic certainty and empower America's small businesses to create jobs."
