Smith Seeks Answers from USDA On LFTB Misinformation

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) has joined 29 bipartisan Members of Congress in sending a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to inquire what steps USDA has taken to correct the public record and educate consumers about lean, finely textured beef (LFTB):

"Over the past several weeks, a great deal of misinformation has been disseminated to the public regarding the high quality lean, finely textured beef that is produced by companies like Beef Products Incorporated," wrote Smith and 29 bipartisan Members of Congress. "This isn't just a problem that will impact those who produce beef; every American who buys beef could end up being harmed by this misinformation."

Smith, who serves as co-chair of the Modern Agriculture Caucus, also added, "America's beef producers continue to demonstrate they are dedicated to providing the highest quality, safest, and most affordable food in the world. The continued success of agriculture, and in turn, the long term safety and security of our nation's food supply depends on our unwavering commitment to science-based public policy."
