Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) has released the following statement regarding the decision by the Department of Labor to back away from its proposed rule restricting young people from working on farms:
"I am pleased that the Department of Labor has backed down from its ridiculous proposal to prevent young people from working on farms. The proposal was misguided and was clearly conceived by bureaucrats with no sense of the realities of life in rural America and would have prevented the next generation of our food producers from learning the critical skills needed to feed our country. I advocated to stop this federal government overreach into the lives of farmers and ranchers and am pleased to see common sense prevail."
Congresswoman Hartzler co-sponsored H.R. 4157 -- legislation to prevent the Department of Labor from implementing this rule, signed letters to the Secretary of Labor outlining the devastating effects of the Department's proposal, and wrote personal comments to the Department about how she would be personally affected.
Congresswoman Hartzler lives on a working farm in Cass County. She serves on the House Agriculture Committee.
