Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur kicked off her campaign in Lorain with a bang as she received the endorsements of Mayor Chase Ritenauer and a host of city elected officials.

At a news conference today at Kaptur headquarters, Mayor Ritenauer said: "Congresswoman Kaptur has been a highly effective Member of Congress who has fought for jobs and investment in Northeastern Ohio. She is results-driven and has an approach to governance that puts working together for the common good above all else. I enthusiastically endorse Congresswoman Kaptur for the Ninth District congressional seat. She is clearly the best choice and will serve the City of Lorain very well in the United States Congress."

"I deeply appreciate the endorsement of Mayor Ritenauer, Council President (Joel) Arredondo and all the other city elected leaders," said Congresswoman Kaptur. "We are united in a common goal: bringing good new jobs to this community. I look forward to working together with each and every one of them."

Congresswoman Kaptur, who is the second-ranking Democrat on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, said she will use her seniority to help bring jobs back to Lorain.

"Job One is more jobs," she said. "I have a plan for job creation and economic development that has already produced real results in the Ninth District. I look forward to implementing that plan in Lorain and the new Ninth District, with the help of all the people in this room today."

Kaptur noted that she has already secured important federal support to Lorain County Community College for job-creating programs at the Entrepreneurship Innovation Institute. "We have a partnership in place and we're ready to get working to create the jobs of the future," she said.

Kaptur last September announced a $2 million federal award at LCCC for the Northeast Ohio Speed-to-Market Accelerator, one of only 20 projects in the country to receive funding in the Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge."

"We have to work together to solve our challenges," she said. "We're all in this together, and as I see the support in this room, I know we can get the job done."

As a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Kaptur said, she can use her seats on the Defense, Transportation and Agriculture Subcommittees to help build a stronger economy in Lorain County.

"We have to have a strong industrial base. That's why I led the fight against NAFTA and other job-killing trade agreements. As the first woman in history to serve on the Defense Subcommittee, I will focus on marrying our industrial base in steel and auto with our nation's defense needs.

"As a member of the Transportation Subcommittee, I will focus on multi-modal transportation opportunities, including rail.

"And, as a member of the Agriculture Subcommittee, I will work to expand the Senior Farmers Market Coupon program, which allows seniors to purchase fresh food at farmers markets. This is a real "growth' sector," she said, noting the numerous greenhouse and horticulture businesses near Lorain. "We can dramatically expand food production within the city limits, and that will create even more jobs."

Kaptur also reiterated her commitments to America's veterans, citing her legislation to create a World War II memorial, a new VA health care facility in Toledo, and increased benefits and health care for those who have served our country.
