House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today to ask her to serve on the House -- Senate conference committee charged with reauthorizing the surface transportation reauthorization bill. The bill, if enacted, would likely be the only major job creation bill passed during this Congress. Norton was chair and is now ranking member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management.
The Senate has passed a comprehensive surface transportation reauthorization bill but the House has not. The conference committee will be unusual because it must reconcile the Senate's bill and the House's 90-day extension of the existing law, which contains several controversial provisions added by House Republicans.
As a member of a small conference committee of Republicans and Democrats, Norton will be in a prime position to fight for the District and for specific amendments she has offered.
