As an immigration attorney, I understand the frustrations inherent in dealing with our immigration service agencies. I support to improving technology at our immigration service centers, decreasing the immigration application backlog, improving visa processing at our consulates around the world, lifting the burdens faced by immigrant family members of the men and women in our armed services, providing better opportunities to highly skilled graduates of American universities, and passing a comprehensive solution to current and future immigration needs. In many respects, America's immigration policy does not live up to its commitment to human rights. I have sponsored numerous pieces of legislation that would bring our immigration policy into line with the spirit of fairness and decency that we, as Americans, cherish. That includes legislation that would recognize the American paternity of Amerasian children (children of American service members who were left behind), ease adoption of foreign children adopted by U.S. citizens, improve our immigration services' handling of foreign children who arrive at our borders with no parent or guardian, provide reasonable care to those in immigration detention facilities in the United States, and ease the visa process for foreign reporters seeking temporary entry to the U.S. I have also been an advocate for refugees and asylum seekers. I believe that America's immigration policies should be based on the founding principles of this great nation. I have worked to ensure that America remains true to its history as a nation of immigrants.
