Buddy Roemer Says NO to CISPA

Statement

Americans Elect Presidential candidate Buddy Roemer issued the following statement on the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act H.R.3523.

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), which allows companies to share your personal data ranging from use history to email communication with government agencies is in absolute violation of our civil liberties. The personal information once shared can be used in the name of "national security" or "cybersecurity," but without regulation or the need for burden of proof. The invasion of our personal freedoms in this bill is appalling. On principle, but especially as Americans, we cannot stand by and allow this bill (HR 3523) to pass. The language is vague, the intent is threatening, and public discourse with professionals in security and technology about the bill has been absent.

Additionally, it must be of no surprise that once you follow the money you find the legs of this bill. Companies like Facebook and Google are in support of HR3523 as they will see a profit on their cybersecurity investment and data sharing. It has been reported that more than $30M has been spent to push this bill through Congress. While protecting the rights and safety of our citizens and internet users is crucially important, CISPA, like SOPA and PIPA are not the answer! Congress and lobbyists, please try again.
