U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement today after meeting with Sir Peter Westmacott, the British Ambassador to the United States:
"In this time of increased international threats, Americans appreciate the stabilizing role that Britain plays as a reliable ally in the Middle East.
"The most urgent issue in the Middle East continues to be the threat of rogue regimes obtaining deadly capabilities for themselves and the extremist groups that they support. Sanctions are having an impact on Iran, but crippling pressure is needed to force the regime to abandon its outlaw pursuit of nuclear arms. Russia and China continue to undermine these sanctions, and stymie efforts to hold Syria accountable for its weapons programs and atrocities against the Syrian people.
"We greatly value Britain's commitment to NATO and its vital peacekeeping mission in South Asia. During his recent trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Ambassador witnessed firsthand the challenges of rooting out radicalized militants who will stop at nothing to undermine our security interests in the region.
"I appreciate the opportunity to meet with the Ambassador and look forward to continue working with our ally on these and other important issues."
