Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today voted in support of the "Surface Transportation Extension Act," a bill that includes the RAMP Act for dredging and protecting Northern Michigan's harbors.
"The harbors and waterways of the Great Lakes play a critical part in Northern Michigan's economy. I see the inclusion of this measure into the surface transportation bill as good news for the maintenance of our harbors and the many jobs they support," said Dr. Benishek.
Dr. Benishek serves on the Great Lakes Task Force, which is a bipartisan group working to "enhance the economic and environmental health of the Great Lakes."
In an effort to increase support for this amendment, Dr. Benishek authored a letter on January 27, 2012, to other members of the House of Representatives to support the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund.
"Since the surface transportation bill has been promoted as a "jobs bill,' I can think of no better way of strengthen the bill than by adding language that will grow the shipping industry and create jobs," Dr. Benishek wrote in the letter.
Michigan's First Congressional District has over 1,600 miles of shoreline--the most in the continental United States and is the only District with shoreline on three of the five Great Lakes.
