Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-Miramar) made the following statement on the two year anniversary of the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig:
"Two years ago today, the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded, leading to the largest oil spill in U.S. history. This catastrophic explosion left eleven men dead in addition to unleashing 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
"As we remember the lives lost and devastation caused by this disaster, let us also take this opportunity to reevaluate our country's outdated energy policies that require us to drill in the first place. The United States must end its dependence on fossil fuels and develop a 21st century renewable, green energy plan. Only then we will be able to show that as a nation we have learned from the mistakes of outdated policies and from tragedies such as the Deepwater Horizon explosion."
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Democratic Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
