Last month, Democratic and Republican Senators overwhelmingly voted to create new jobs, repair our roads and bridges, invest in our infrastructure, and strengthen our economy. The House should follow suit and immediately bring up the bipartisan job-creating Senate bill that passed by a vote of 74 to 22. We must act immediately to send the bipartisan Senate transportation bill to the President's desk before the current highway programs expire at the end of the month. We must pass this legislation in order to give our state and local governments the certainty they need to pave the way for a stronger America.
Transportation has long been a bipartisan issue -- and I am proud the Senate has continued this tradition. In contrast, some members in the House of Representatives have advanced a transportation bill that is considered by all parties involved to be the most partisan and ineffective transportation bill in decades. Instead of taking up a Senate proposal that creates more than two million jobs, some in the House are pushing a bill that destroys more than half-a-million jobs.
I strongly encourage the leadership of the House of Representatives to take a bipartisan approach, and swiftly enact bipartisan Senate bill to make the investments necessary to strengthen our economy and our middle class, create jobs, and rebuild America.
