Governor Kitzhaber applauded the announcement by the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that Race to the Top funding is available for continued investments in state-level, comprehensive early education reform. Oregon is one of only five states eligible to compete for a portion of the $133 million in available funding.
"I am excited Oregon is invited to apply for the funds. This is welcome recognition of our progress streamlining and coordinating early education programs to ensure all children are ready to learn when they enter kindergarten," said Governor Kitzhaber.
The $133 million for 2012 Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge State grants will come from a larger $550 million fund provided by Congress through the Department of Education's fiscal year 2012 budget. Additional dollars from the 2012 appropriation will be used to run a new district-level Race to the Top competition. More details on the new competition will be available later this spring.
