Russ Carnahan to Speak at Fair Housing Event

Representative Russ Carnahan will join with the St. Louis Civil Rights Enforcement Agency today to commemorate the passing of the Fair Housing Act, an integral part of the Civil Rights Act of 1968.The event will be held at the Renaissance at Grand Community Building in St. Louis.

The Fair Housing Act (FHA), enacted as part of the 1968 Civil Rights Act under Lyndon B. Johnson, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of housing on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, or marital status.

"It has been 44 years since the Fair Housing Act was enacted as part of sweeping civil rights legislation which has changed our country forever to the good," said Carnahan. "In four decades we've come a long way from doors being slammed in people's faces. But each of us, in our own way, must reaffirm our pledge to eradicate the discrimination which still exists in our society, to continue to open doors for all people, regardless of their race, their station in life, their sexual orientation or the country of their birth."

The St. Louis Civil Rights Enforcement Agency works to eliminate, reduce and remedy discrimination in housing, employment, education, city services, public accommodations, and real property transactions and uses. This event will recognize the positive impact of the Fair Housing Act to date and plans for continued opportunity for fair housing going forward.
