Governor Sean Parnell today thanked legislators for joining him in creating a sustainable fund for Alaska Performance Scholarships and Alaska Advantage grants. The merit-based scholarships were created through legislation in 2010 spearheaded by Governor Parnell. With the passage of House Bill 104, a fund will be established using interest and earnings to fund both Alaska Performance Scholarships and Alaska Advantage grants into the future.
The governor was also pleased that the Legislature included scholarship funding for the classes of 2011 and 2012.
"The fund that Alaska will establish ensures that students who are entering high school this year will have access to Alaska Performance Scholarships and Alaska Advantage grants when they graduate," Governor Parnell said. "Setting aside funds in an interest-earning account that protects the principal investment is a time-tested method to create certainty for years to come."
Alaska Performance Scholarships provide an incentive for students to take a rigorous curriculum to better prepare for college or job training. The Alaska Performance Scholarship is available to Alaska residents who attend a qualified Alaska college, university, or career-technical program.
