Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam (IL-06) gave the following remarks at the GOP leadership press conference today about the Republican Path to Prosperity Budget and the U.S. Supreme Court taking up the President's healthcare law.
"This is a week where epic issues are being debated in Washington. Here in the House of Representatives we're having a debate about a budget that contrasts opportunity with overspending and decline.
"You heard earlier references to the time-lag and lack of leadership by Senate Democrats. To put it into an Illinois context, the last time the Senate Democrats passed a budget was the day Governor Blagojevich was indicted.
"Now, the Supreme Court is obviously taking up the healthcare debate. And not withstanding the decision that the Supreme Court makes -- in other words regardless of how they rule -- in the court of public opinion the country has spoken.
"When Nancy Pelosi was Speaker of the House she said she had to pass the bill in order that we could find out what was in it. Well she passed it, and now the American public has found out what's in it and they've rejected it. According to the New York Times, 1 in 4 Americans say leave it intact. In other words, most Americans say change it. And what we say is repeal and replace it."
