Congressman Bill Shuster toured the Lutheran Home Care & Hospice this morning in Chambersburg and spoke to the staff and seniors about the importance of the services they provide.

"It is so important to support programs like the LIFE program because of their ability to keep seniors independent in their homes at a much lower cost to the state and federal government," said Shuster.

The Living Independence for the Elderly program (LIFE) offers medical and supportive service to enable seniors to maintain independence in the homes as long as possible.

Medicare and the Commonwealth of PA pay LIFE Lutheran Services a monthly amount per participant and with that money they are responsible for all necessary approved medical services and beyond.

"If a senior needs home health care or any other medical service, they provide it or contract with a provider to provide it, then they pay the bill. They do not charge Medicare for home health," said Shuster.

The LIFE program provides transportation to and from the center and to needed medical appointments. LIFE also provides physical and occupational therapy in accordance with the participant's needs and without premiums, deductibles, co-pays or limits. LIFE services are available to individuals who are at least 55 years old or older and who require a nursing home level of care.

Founded in 1978, Lutheran Home Care & Hospice, Inc. is a not-for-profit, faith-based home care agency dedicated to a mission to serve and care. Lutheran Home Care & Hospice provides home health care, home health telemonitoring, hospice and in-home support services throughout south central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland.

There are currently 17 LIFE providers in PA, the largest number in any state. Last year a total of 3,288 seniors were served by LIFE saving the state $72 million.
