Location: Washington, DC

Senator Kent Conrad today applauded the news that the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works has signed the record of decision today officially signifying to Congress that the Obama Administration has approved the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' plan for a Fargo-Moorhead flood control project.

"We are one critical step closer to making the locally preferred flood control project for Fargo-Moorhead a reality," Senator Conrad said. "Now we will continue the difficult work of convincing our colleagues in Congress that the project should be authorized and funded. Though much work remains, I am confident that at the end of the day we will deliver the permanent protection this community needs," Senator Conrad said.

The Administration's approval of the project late last week cleared the way for the Record of Decision to be signed today. The Corps plan will now be sent to Congress for authorization. Senator Conrad said he will continue to push to advance the plan and then work to secure the federal funding necessary to construct the project.

Senator Conrad said the locally preferred Fargo-Moorhead flood control plan has the backing of the local community, Cass County, and State, and now the White House. Senator Conrad said he would continue to work to mitigate the upstream impacts of the flood control project.

Although the Fargo - Moorhead region has suffered some of its worst flooding in recent years, experts warn that it is only a matter of time until the area is hit with even more catastrophic flooding. According to the Corps, a 100-year flood event would cause nearly $6 billion in damages.
