U.S. Senators Mark Pryor and John Boozman today joined Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-2) to announce that the Perryville Volunteer Fire Department will receive an $89,680 grant from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) Program to purchase self-contained breathing apparatuses.

"Our local firefighters deserve the very best tools to keep them safe while on the job," Pryor said. "This new equipment will be a great benefit as they help save lives under dangerous conditions."

"This grant provides tools our firefighters need to protect their safety while responding to emergency situations," Boozman said. "This investment will play an important role in protecting Perryville citizens."

"Protecting those who protect our communities is critical, and this new breathing equipment will help ensure that the volunteer firefighters in Perryville are better prepared to respond when life is threatened," Griffin said.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is an important component of the larger, coordinated effort to strengthen the nation's overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards.

AFG provides fire departments with the tools and resources necessary to protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel. Since 2001, AFG has provided over $5 billion in grants for emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training.
