Encourage businesses to hire and expand

When times are this tough for this long it's difficult for business owners to feel good about bringing on more employees or expanding their operations.

That's where tax incentives could really help.

I support tax incentives for investments in new plants and equipment. Instead of a continuing exodus of good-paying jobs from Vancouver, Camas, and elsewhere in the Third District helping employers upgrade and update their facilities could start creating jobs locally.

With so many people in our community unemployed, I also think that Congress can do a lot more to help small businesses put people back to work. Tax credits for hiring the long-term unemployed would provide a bit of a safety net to nudge employers back into the hiring mode.

At a time when there's so much divisive nonsense going on Washington DC, these two proposals are things that both Republicans and Democrats should be able to support.
